The use and improper disposal of non-biodegradable materials have become a growing problem for all of us. As Sri Lankans, we must ensure that non-biodegradable materials are disposed of responsibly across the island. It’s time for us to come together and fulfill that responsibility and create a cleaner tomorrow for Sri Lanka.

I pledge, starting this week, to be a responsible citizen who minimises the use of polythene and plastic and ensures proper disposal after use.^*

I will use a refillable non-plastic water bottle. I will use eco-friendly options to replace lunch sheets (for example: glass lunch boxes, banana leaves, etc.). I will separate biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste for proper disposal. I will use cloth bags instead of polythene bags for my shopping. I will avoid using single-use plastic (for example: Yogurt spoons, plastic straws, bowls, cups, utensils, etc.). I will support plastic recycling by ensuring non-biodegradable items don’t end up on the streets (for example: toffee wrappers, milk packets, popsicle wrappers, etc.).
